Best free AI image generators: what can you actually create and download?

Conceptual illustration of a creative desk with colourful artwork and cards labelled ChatGPT, Gemini, Firefly and Ideogram.

The best free AI image generator for you is the one that lets you finish the job: create an image, make the changes you need and download a usable file. Start with ChatGPT or Gemini for conversational edits; consider Firefly for an Adobe workflow, or Ideogram if public generations suit your project.

This comparison covers documented free features for adult personal-account users, checked on 19 October 2026. We have not tested image quality or inspected downloaded files.

The four free options compared

ToolCreate and editDownloadMain restriction
ChatGPT FreeGenerate images and edit uploaded or generated pictures in chat.Save images to your device; exact free pixel ceiling unverified.Image creation has separate usage limits from chat.
Gemini without an AI planGenerate and edit with Nano Banana 2.Google documents 1K downloads without an AI plan.Usage limits can change; check your account.
Firefly FreeLimited daily generations using a curated model selection; check available editing tools.Direct downloads documented; current free resolution ceiling unverified.Daily allowance, features and models can change.
Ideogram FreeGenerate and use AI edit; Select area, Extend and Remix require payment.Original-size JPEG; transparent results have a free 1K PNG exception.Eligible sign-ins receive 30 credits weekly. Free generations are public.

Sources: OpenAI’s free-plan FAQ and image guide; Google’s image guide and limits; Adobe’s free allowance and download tutorial; Ideogram’s plans, editing tools and downloads.

Two details deserve attention. Ideogram’s free credits require Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in; email-and-password registrations receive none. Credits are not image counts. Google’s “1K” label also does not promise identical dimensions for every aspect ratio.

Which fits your task?

For changes described in everyday language: try ChatGPT or Gemini. Both document editing uploaded images. Inspect the entire result after each revision: OpenAI warns that edits can extend beyond your selected area.

For an Adobe-based project: try Firefly, checking the available model and tools before starting. Adobe documents downloading a result and continuing in Express; that workflow does not establish unlimited free access to every feature.

For JPEG output: Ideogram is worth considering if public generation is acceptable. If you need transparency, check the PNG exception above and the credits required to create the asset.

Check privacy before uploading

Skip Ideogram Free for confidential client concepts because its generations are public. Elsewhere, review the controls: ChatGPT lets you opt new conversations out of training. Google says temporary chats are not used for training, but retains them with your account for 72 hours.

Adobe says it does not analyse your content to train generative models unless you submit it to Adobe Stock. Training policy is only one consideration; check retention and other processing before uploading sensitive material.

Should you pay? Try one complete job first

Choose one representative task, request a revision and download the result. Check its dimensions, format, text accuracy and suitability for your intended use. For print, inspect the actual file before ordering.

Stay free if that workflow meets your needs. Consider paying only when a specific limit blocks you and the paid plan explicitly removes it. In Ireland, check the euro checkout total, tax and billing commitment before subscribing. A useful finished image matters more than a generous-looking quota.
